Moke Lake is a glacial lake situated in the Wakatipu Basin, approximately 20 kilometers northwest of Queenstown, New Zealand.
Visual Characteristics
The lake is characterized by its irregular shape and is surrounded by tussock-covered hills. Water color varies from deep blue to green depending on light conditions and depth. The shoreline is primarily composed of gravel and rock.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Moke Lake is via Moke Lake Road, a gravel road that branches off State Highway 6 (Queenstown-Glenorchy Road) approximately 15 kilometers from Queenstown. The road is unsealed for the final 4 kilometers. Parking is available at the lake's edge, with capacity for approximately 20 vehicles. There are no public transport services directly to Moke Lake.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Moke Lake is a remnant of glacial activity from the last ice age. Its formation is attributed to glacial scouring and subsequent deposition of moraine, creating a natural dam that impounded meltwater. The surrounding landscape exhibits typical alpine tussockland vegetation.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking the Moke Lake Loop Track (a 6.5km circuit) is a primary activity. Kayaking and paddleboarding are possible on the lake. Birdwatching is also a common pursuit, with various native species present. Photography opportunities are available, particularly during sunrise and sunset.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities include a designated campsite with pit toilets and a few picnic tables. There are no food vendors or shops at the lake. Cell phone reception is intermittent and generally unreliable.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer optimal lighting conditions. The months of December through February (summer) provide the most stable weather. The lake is accessible year-round, though winter conditions can bring frost and snow to surrounding higher ground.
Facts & Legends
A local geological feature known as the "Rock Garden" is located on the western side of the lake, characterized by a concentration of large, weathered boulders. The lake is a popular spot for stargazing due to its low light pollution.
